Mid Back Issues
The thoracic spine consists of the vertebra between the lower neck C7 and the upper lower back L1. As with the previous e-newsletters outlining the lower back and neck the middle back vertebrae support a number of specific and crucial spinal nerve groups (plexus) affecting your digestion and immune system. Below I will outline the areas involved as well as what you can do to be proactive to prevent wear and tear and accumulative degeneration that will affect your overall health.

The lower neck and upper back houses the brachial plexus, outlined last week, with an array of spinal nerves that travel down your arm as well as the axillary nerve that feeds into the shoulders. The trapezius muscles support your neck and upper back with the latissimus muscles the lower and middle back.

The celiac plexus is a group of nerves that feed into the digestive area which besides handling digestion also finds 70% of your immune system supported within the gut. The vagus nerve feeds into the digestive area as well.

Considering how we use our middle back at home, work and sports with bending, reaching, twisting and lifting using quick motion and resistance, it is no wonder wear and tear overtime affects spinal nerve flow and overall health and wellness

Let's look at some physical activities that may aggravate the middle back. Above shows young parents lifting car seats and being creative doing so. You can easily see how this will aggravate the neck, middle and lower back. Being proactive with stretch exercises as well as chiropractic care keeps the spine in line as well as reduce pressure exerted on the spinal column and spinal nerves. Time to be proactive is at this crucial age, makes sense to me. Also, lift the car seat correctly

Young kids playing physical sports enjoy the moment but find over time wear and tear that will affect their overall health.

Often young students carry their backpacks incorrectly with the weight of books not evenly balanced and having the packs draw down on the neck and upper back. Over time, even a young healthy spine will take its toll. Choose backpacks wisely. Always pack the backpack depending on size of student

Above is a side view of the spine and the nerves that travel to vital functional organs. See how many innervate via the thoracic or middle back. Take a few moments to determine how your lifestyle is affecting your middle back with physical stress. No moment to lose planning to prevent further wear and tear and how you can adapt to the ergonomic needs at home or work.
