The Activator Adjustment
Chiropractic has been around since 1895. It began in Davenport, Iowa and has evolved into the largest alternative healthcare profession with schools throughout the world, the largest being right here in Marietta, Georgia, Life University, College of Chiropractic.
Chiropractic still remains a mystery to most which is a shame as many would benefit if they knew more about it. I too was at a loss when it came my time to get my first adjustment in 1972. My chiropractor tried to explain the science of it but it went over my head, all I was concerned about was relief which evaded me after years of medical care.
As I have written in previous e-newsletters, the body is a self healing organism when able and reducing tension and interference from the nervous system is primary. The chiropractic adjustment is the key and the adjustment can vary depending on the patient, the skill of the doctor as well as training. Our office uses both manual (hands on) adjustments as well as instruments the Activator used most.
Today, I have a number of links to videos from various doctors explaining the Activator as well other tools we use. The body has various ways to stress the supportive tissue that protects the nervous system, specifically spine. The spinal column consists of 26 vertebrae with a disc between and spinal nerves that travel between these spinal segments traveling throughout the body, I call these functional nerves. They compromise 80% of spinal nerve function with only 20% sensitive producing pain. Again, the key is to reduce tension to these areas and adjacent joints that support them.
The medical world does glorious magic with medication and when necessary surgery, a physical therapist does a wonderful job locating segmental restrictions and advises and works with their patients to mobilize and rehabilitate as well as many alternative healthcare providers such as naturopaths, acupuncturists and more but the chiropractic takes it one step further.
I agree it all looks much simpler than the outcome but simple is the intention with less physical stress while focusing on the specific subluxated segments. It is the subluxation, the term chiropractors use to describe spinal nerve pressure, that is the intention of the adjustment. Reducing and removing pressure to the vertebral area allows the spinal nerves to function as intended allowing the body to heal and wellness to return. An active person from a toddler to the senior years develop levels of wear and tear that the body adapts to but when it is overwhelmed it succumbs to a defensive mode creating adhesions, restricted movement and when it applies to the spine and adjacent joints, degeneration.
It may look simple and take only a few minutes but the adjustment is what is necessary when the spine is subluxated and only a chiropractic evaluation can determine the extent and how best to adjust and manage the spine. Next week, my message will be about Thanksgiving and I am profoundly grateful to Dr. David Singer, my first chiropractor. Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC and Life College of Chiropractic in Marietta where I attended and taught me the skills needed to assist you as well as various mentors along the way.
The message is simple, follow your chiropractic treatment plan, do your stretches, manage your lifestyle at work and home and maintain your spinal health with periodic checkups. Also important, be a Good Samaritan and never keep chiropractic care a secret. You never know who in your group of family and friends, work and sport mates as well as those you worship with may benefit from a kind referral from you.

Life College of Chiropractic Lights Begins Thanksgiving

LIFE University introduced the Lights of LIFE in 1989 as a gift to the local community and it has now grown to be one of the most popular light shows in the Southeast attracting nearly half a million spectators from the surrounding region. Cars, vans and buses cruise through the spectacularly illuminated campus each year, often stopping along the 1.5-mile drive to enjoy an array of seasonal entertainments.  For more information visit1269 Barclay Circle Marietta, GA 30060
